Reading at Stedham

Phonics at Stedham
At Stedham, we use Bug Club as our phonics scheme to help children develop confident reading skills and a genuine love of learning.
With its engaging stories, interactive activities, and carefully structured progression, Bug Club supports every child in building strong phonics knowledge while enjoying the excitement of reading. By making reading fun, accessible, and meaningful, we aim to inspire lifelong learners who feel proud of their achievements and eager to explore new books and ideas.
The phonics screening check
All children in Year 1 take the phonics screening check, which is designed to confirm whether children have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard. Children in Year 2 retake the check if they did not meet the required standard in Year 1. You can read more on our Key Stage Assessments page.
Reading at home
Homework is an extension and reinforcement of work in school and includes reading at home. Teachers appreciate feedback from parents as to how their children coped with the homework activities. The guides on this page will help you support your child with the sounds they are learning.
