From school board to village primary
A school board was set up in 1874 to establish a school in the village of Stedham. The present school opened in 1879 and was built for children aged 5 to 13. By the early 1950s it had become a primary school for infants and juniors up to the age of 11.
In the 1970s the school became a first school under the Rother Valley’s new three-tier system, so children moved on at 10 rather than 11.
In 1986 the school was completely remodelled and re-equipped with three classrooms, a hall, a library, cloakrooms, toilets and offices.
In September 2009 the Rother Valley moved back to a two-tier system. A new, fully equipped classroom was added for the growing number of children on roll.
The school today
As well as four classrooms, we have a large outside area where Early Years and Key Stage 1 children learn and play. There is plenty of hard-surfaced play space, and common land for dry weather. Less than five minutes’ walk away is the village’s superb sports ground, which we use for sports day, our annual football tournament and after-school clubs.
